I'll Never Fall in Love Again...

By Burt Bacharach and Hal David

What do you get when you fall in love?
A guy with a pin to burst your bubble
That's what you get for all your trouble
I'll never fall in love again
I'll never fall in love again

What do you get when you kiss a girl
You get enough germs to catch pneumonia
After you do, she'll never phone you
I'll never fall in love again
I'll never fall in love again

Don't tell me what it's all about
'Cause I've been there and I'm glad I'm out
Out of those chains those chains that bind you
That is why I'm here to remind you

What do you get when you give your heart
You get it all broken up and battered
That's what you get, a heart that's shattered
I'll never fall in love again
I'll never fall in love again

Out of those chains those chains that bind you
That is why I'm here to remind you

What do you get when you fall in love?
You only get lies and pain and sorrow
So for at least until tomorrow

I'll never fall in love again
I'll never fall in love again
I'll never fall in love again

I'll never fall in love again!

In Real Time. Sung by the amazing jazz stylist, Denee Barr, these wonderful lyrics by Hal David reveal the heart of a person who has just suffered from losing what were likely his or her own exaggerated expectations for a romance, for love. Of course, the narrator will come back to love again because it is a need for most people. You rock, Denee!

Now…the meaning of the lyrics, as I interpret them, is ironic…and dishonest…and thus apply to so many of us who live in a made-up romantic land and want to stay there, unscathed...at least for awhile, safe.

On the other hand—with Camilla, my heart is always open because hers is. You can see from these photos that she is in a constant state of grace, whatever that means. She is overtly and abstractly beautiful. Her hopeful expression may just mean she wants me to feed her.

Or hold her. I do both. I interpret this delicate interplay as love. We are--what is that term? “Together.”

Photos, top to bottom: "I'd know those pointed ears anywhere"; "Abstractly Camilla"; "Curved Cat on Jute Rug"; "Handing Camilla My Heart"; and "Blue Camilla Profile."

Thanks again to Denee Barr for joining me in this Valentine's Day, 2011, post.
